How to be a fashion olympian

Bejing Bling
RI Girl introduces fashion's new sport

I watched the 400m freestyle finals last night and was frankly exhausted after the first 50m. I attempted to cheer on the beach volleyballers, yet only found my body image deteriorating rapidly. But then came the equestrian trials and suddenly I was dreaming about Noir's black nipped in blazers, leather coats , plumed hats and Ginger &Smart's dresses in bright jockey silks . At last I had been inspired by the Olympics, not to get off the couch to go for a jog - I wanted to gallop to the Rous Iland showroom for my ultimate winter wardrobe.

It takes dedication, commitment and patience to be a champion.  We are all fashion olympians in training - yet are tempted by the weakness of  instant gratification. That's where we women make those little mistakes with retail therapy pick-me-ups and impulse purchases, never to be worn again.
This type of shopping is what I call the boring Bronze.

In more disciplined moments we make lists, tidy out our warbrobes and hit the streets to do battle - only to return with 20 items none of which work together and are actually quite like those items we have just thrown away. This I call the unsatisfactory Silver.

Don't fret, Kara and Clare are here to train you to Gold. It does take a little effort and energy. But take time out of your busy schedule and book an appointment at the showroom to try on more options than you can imagine or call Clare & Kara for a telephone appointment and have the items sent to your door - be forced out of your comfort zone to try new shapes and flattering colours and find this season's pieces which work on you. The jubilant feeling of hitting that perfect score of 10 is worth the patience. Heads will turn, friends will cheer and you will be chic and smug when the rewarding compliments rain down.

So girls get into the habit of smart planning, and go for gold.
After all, practice makes for the perfect wardrobe.

Take a load off, put a hot dress on.

The Rous Iland summer party is here to chill you out...

Women have gathered together for centuries. For protection, for nurturing, and most recently for shopping. It's been scientifically proven that ladies, when stressed, release a hormone called Oxytoxcin which encourages them to gather with other women. RI girl just likes to call it a party.
No excuses. See you and your like-minded fashion fiends (and friends) there.

There is a spiritual shopper in all of us - we leave it up to fate. All those times we wanted something but held back thinking: if it's there at the sale, I'll get it...
if it's sold out, we console ourselves: wasn't meant to be...
even though we are quietly kicking ourselves with our Kirsten platforms for not having snapped it up in the first place!

We all know that tempting fate can be dangerous. So now the sale is on, get in quick and get your pieces. Don't let your wishlist be just that...

Game, Set, Match your shoes with your dress

Game, Set, Match your shoes with your dress

Wimbledon is having a fashion moment. It’s long been named the spectator sport, because we all know there is more watching the audience than the action taking place on court. But between Serena's "delectable" (her word, not mine) warm-up trench and Roger's cardi, the players have stepped it up this year.

You’ve got a lot to compete with - on and off court. Tennis champions are renowned for dating/marrying stunningly beautiful women and movie stars, so the stakes are as high as your Daria platforms .

So if you're preparing to attend this year, there should be something fresh about your outfit. Tennis is a clean sport – no tackles, no scrums. The ugliest it gets is the grunting and groaning, and even that can be quite appealing coming from Novak Djokovic. There should be a hint of white in your ensemble (try Nicola de Main's button dress ) to pay some respect to tradition.

And as Wimbeldon is the epitome of casual preppy chic, tailored Leni Braun shorts , with Pedro sandals , and a pretty Irwin & Jordan shirt are a nice way to go. Even Maria Sharapova is donning shorts on the court this year. Man-style dressing can work really well. For a big centre court match, stand tall in  Noir suit trousers and simple white t-shirt . Don’t forget a hat . Oliver Goldsmith sunglasses are a must to hide those moments you choose to focus on Nadal's arms rather than the match... For cooler days, a pair of Earnest Sewn jeans with a pretty Meghan Fabulous top and some flats is just right. Smash Serena's attempts and don a Noir silver trench .

For those of you anti-arenas, who will be enjoying the intelligent sport from a picnic blanket armed with champagne, strawberries and cream or a friend's flat-screen, Beatrix Ong’s joceyln shoes will work a treat with a Laundry Industry wrap dress . You don’t want to look like you're going clubbing.

And remember, no matter how patriotic you are, the only face painting you should be doing for your country is a touch of bronzer and lip gloss.

Just as Federer said “I'll have a cardigan. I'll make sure I'll be a class act on the court", with a Wimbeldon wardrobe from Rous Iland , you will be a winner off-court. Clare and Kara will take you from wild card to top seed.

Advantage, RI Girl.

A pair of Pedros for your thoughts? Rous Iland seeks contributions to the ultimate LBB

The Tyranny of Choice: RI rewards contributions to the ultimate Little Black Book

Like ladybugs and frogs, I too hibernate in the colder months, fattening up whilst watching Hepburn films. So deep was my hibernation this year, I had been in denial that summer officially began 18 days ago!  Faster than my pale skin can say ‘spray tan’ my inbox has been filling up with invites to celebrate the sun in various states of play.

But last night I woke in a panic in my Hari shirt:
Where to get the organic free-range chicken for the bbq?
Which open air opera/concert/play should I see?
What tropical isle/hideaway villa/low key eco British sea-side haven should I visit for some guaranteed R&R???
Which pedicurist will make my feet Beatrix Ong-worthy?

Whilst I am calmly assured in selecting my statement Nicola de Main paint print dress for Glastonbury, pretty Leona Edmiston's Amy dress for Henley and frilled Mattijs van Bergen's Famke shirt for the Proms – I waste precious hours when it comes to questions like:

Which eye cream? Who does the best brow threading?
Blackberry or Iphone? Which novel to pack for my holiday?

We need to narrow it down to a perfect list of only the crème de la crème for all us RI Girls to share…

Rous Iland's Little Black Book is launching on 1st September and I want to be sure that, as members, you can all share your best kept secrets on Restaurants & Bars, Travel & Escapes, Beauty, Events, Gadgets, Cars, Fine Jewellery, and Homes. As an added bonus, Rous Iland will give you 1 reward point for every recommendation they learn about from you and include in the LBB*. Remember 10 points entitle you to £100 to spend on the current collection.
Now that's better than a penny for your thoughts...
Email your ideas to
LBB@rousiland.com or call 0845 003 8945.

Twinkle Toes - 25% off SS08 Shoes

“If a woman rebels against high-heeled shoes,

Twinkle toes! RI Girl says let the foot festivities begin...

For years, women have honoured their feet. They have been the source of fascination throughout history and legend. From Cleopatra's Egyptian sandals to Cinderalla's glass slipper, women everywhere have united in their love for shoes.

Shoes are simply throwing a party for your feet, so we must celebrate. And with the birth of summer in London just days ago, feet are again…sexy. Toe cleavage anyone? High heels give your feet the illusion of a high arch. Hot. They extend the length of your legs. Hooray. And no amount of stair master can give your calves such a shapely finish. Yes please. Shoes will make us happy even on a fat day. They can lift an outfit to a new level entirely thanks to
Pedro's Daria platform sandals , of which I am a proud collector (and the Kaira platforms - woops...) for this very reason. Prefer to simply sparkle closer to the ground? Just snap up the Inaras and Sonias for your more acrophobic moods.

Yes there are a couple of pairs I love so much and never wear; they are too high to walk in. But just last night I had an epiphany. I christened them my ‘dinner party’ shoes! I realised they are tres comfortable, as long as I’m sitting down. So ladies welcome in the
new categories. No more ‘platforms /wedges / stilettos /gladiators’. They are now ‘dinner party ( Kirstens )/ cocktail party ( Primrose )/ dancing ( Yaniras )/ office-at-my-desk-all-day ( Kasirai ) / office-running-between-meetings-all day ( Jocelyn ) / pool-to-bar ( Sonias )'. It’s much more fun and none of your foot-friends will ever be left alone in the dark of the closet again!

RI Girl Talks Wedding Belles and Ascot Mascots

Dressing for the big day can be difficult. Someone else’s big day that is. Be it friend or horse.

For weddings, we feel restricted by the rules: no white/cream/ivory. Nothing that out-does the bride. Well ladies, good news, the latter is impossible. No one can ever look better than a bride because the bride is glowing from within, and that sort of happiness just can’t be trumped. So don’t worry about wearing Leona Edmiston's fabulous Tabatha frock because the most that will happen is guests will compliment you and want to touch your dress, the bride will be delighted that you made the effort, you’ll look hot in the photos. If you are single, you are really increasing your chances, if you know what I mean. And if you are in a relationship, this will ensure your man keeps his eyes on the prize. You.

Being over-dressed is far better than being under-done, as long as you look fabulous. If it’s black tie then a floor length gown like Sara Berman's maxi dress  is ideal. The only reason we would want to see your ankles is if you are cutting some serious rug on the dance floor, or if your dress is Mattijs van Bergen ’s Sabina paired with Pedro Garcia’s Kirsten platforms  or a  Jasuma hand embroidered stunner – something that lifts it from the ‘cocktail’ dress code. Leggings and a mini-skirt are a RINO. That’s a Rous Iland “NO!” or simply, the big ugly animal.

Similarly for the races, don’t be afraid of donning a rocking hat . It’s all about the accessories. That means flossy jewellery like Princess Monkey’s Morocco glam earrings  and Mattijs van Bergen's cuff . Don’t ruin a pretty outfit with a clunky casual bag. A luxe Botkier Marysia clutch will put you and your blackberry in good stead, and big enough to fit your Oliver Goldsmiths . Stilettos should be avoided due to fast grass (the equivalent of quick sand). So hello Pedro ! and keep the height with Daria Platforms . No flats or sandals. Horse games are not called dressage for nothing. They want you to dress-up…

Feeling less girly and more fierce elegance (or you just wish to pay tribute to the late YSL's trouser suit)? Then don a
silver one by Noir - the perfect antidote to the florals and frills but just as fabulous.

If you book yourself in to see Kara and Clare pronto, the odds will be in your favour. Wouldn’t you rather come 2nd place behind the bride - rather than second last - in the best dressed race?

How To Be Glamorous and Comfortable: the GLOMF appeal
musing of RI Girl

I have a little secret drawer in my bedroom. It has tracksuit pants, bad leggings and big sweaters with even bigger American sports team names blazoned across the front of them. There are also some holey ugg boots and holey socks. This is my comfort drawer, my PMT bloated drawer, my chocolate in front of the box drawer, my run-down-to-the-shops-to get-more-chocolate-I’m-sure-no-one-will-see-me drawer.

But when I actually wear an outfit from this drawer I usually have a surprise meeting which makes me regret it, like being confronted by my ex in the ice-cream section. I was sure when I went to get a dvd on the Monday afternoon of the long weekend that there would be no one of importance in sight. So I dressed up ‘a la secret drawer’. But to my horror, there was the ex, new girlfriend in tow, and a ‘hello’ was unavoidable. I looked several sizes larger than I actually am – thanx to the terrific supersize me sweater I had on. My hair was a shocking quiff of afro. And even though I didn’t smell bad, I certainly looked like I did.

So I am taking a stance, throwing away the key to this drawer, and you all must follow suit. Because there is a solution ladies...

Rous Iland has a range of GLOMF attire. Simple  Pedro Garcia flats are a perfect solution to ugg boots and they actually take less time to put on. A  Sara Berman chunky knit cardigan is a stylish effortless alternative for picking up the groceries. Nothing tight around the tummy, but nothing that makes you look like a giant blueberry, Violet Beauregarde style. A sweet Madeleine Thompson charm chain is the perfect way to add some sparkle to your bod.

If you want to take your GLOMF factor to another level, try Rous Iland's new Hari yoga and lounge wear. With Madonna as a fan and Daisy Lowe modelling for SS08, Lainey Sheridan-Young’s sportwear is the fashionable active-lifestyle clothing. Lainey worked as a fashion stylist, PR and sales agent before launching Hari, her own British lifestyle brand. A yoga teacher as well, Lainey's mission is to provide clothing for any independent woman who wants an outfit to look great in for the gym or the yoga class as well as during lunch or on the street.  I'll be wearing the 80's Inside-Out Sweatshirt a la Flashdance. For nights in with the girls watching re-runs of SATC, you might want to try the Kissing Girls t-shirt. I'll be ditching my American sports sweater and taking out my glomfy Cashmere hoodie to get my milk and impress the ex...
